へ(eh)

へ (“eh”)
General direction of travel

へ (eh) is wrote as “he” but read as “eh“. It is very similar to に, but is much more limited in scope. It can only indicate a general direction of travel, and cannot be used to mark anything else that に can.

  • アメリカいく – Amerika e iku – Go towards America. (probably to America, but could go past it, or stop before it)
  • やまいく (yama e iku) – Go towards the mountain (maybe to visit a village on the way).
  • にほんようこそ – Nihon e youkoso- Welcome to Japan (this is a phrase)

It is frequently used with むかう, a verb that means “go towards”
