ぶり (振り) has 2 distinct meanings:

You probably recognize ぶり from ひさしぶり. X ぶり just means “Its been X since”.
This meaning will generally use かな

Examples

  • 彼女を会うのは1ヶ月ぶり First time I’ve seen her in a month.
  • 4年ぶりオリンピックだ – First Olympics in 4 years.
  • 半年ぶり温泉に行く。 – Going to an onsen for the first time in half a year.

ぶり can also mean “Manner of” or “Movement of”. It can attach to certain nouns that may have a manner to them;
typically する verbs, but can also certain others.

This meaning tends to use the 漢字 for ぶり, 振り with certain compounds.

ぶり typically refers to observable qualities, as opposed to method (しかた)

Examples

  • 見事な勉強ぶりだった – An impressive manner of studying.
  • 彼の振りはおかしかった- His gestures were weird. 
  • 怒ったぶりだった。It was an angry way of speaking.
  • 彼の振りは激しかった – He made some wild hand gestures
  • 彼の話しぶりはすっごくわかりやすかった – His way of talking was very easy to understand.
