Verbs
This page is a simple overview of Japanese verbs. If you want to learn about basic conjugations, please see the verb conjugations page.
Japanese verbs:
- Typically represent an action. (Advanced: see transitive and intransitive)
- They typically use the を particle for their target.
- End in an う (u) sound in their dictionary form.
- Come at the end of a sentence. (sentences usually must end with a verb)
- Have only 2 true tenses, and only 2 main irregular verbs.
Verbs are listed in the dictionary in their dictionary form; which is the simple present/future tense.
Common Verbs (Must learn)
- する (suru) – do
- いく (iku) – go
- くる (kuru) – come
- たべる (taberu) – eat
- のむ (nomu) – drink
- みる (miru) – watch/look/see
- ける (keru) – kick
- きる (kiru) – cut
- きる (kiru) – wear (same sound as cut)
- よむ (yomu) – read
- およぐ (oyogu) – swim
- かえる (kaeru) – go home.
