かのよう

Nouns + であるかのよう

かのよう is a variation of よう.
As you may guess from the か particle, its a less certain version of よう.
It may also imply that the thing is specifically NOT the thing it looks like.
Its a little more common in literature.
It is used with に, な, and だ/です

Examples

  • であるかのよう寝転んだ – Laid down as if they were a cat. 
  • 何もなかったかのよう話した – Talked as if nothing happened. (Something did happen).
  • 幽霊を見たかのよう顔をして帰った – Made a face as if they saw a ghost and went home. 
  • 昼なのに、そとは真夜中であるかのようだった – Even though it was noon, outside was as if it was the middle of the night. 

Comparison to よう

  • よう – Like
  • かのよう – Almost as if/Almost like
