たまえ

たまえ

Light Command
“Do me a favor and…”
ます stem + たまえ

たまえ (給え) literally means “give me”. The thing “given” is a favor/cooperation.
This is an uncommon type of light/calm command. The other person is more likely to be disappointed than mad if you don’t do it.
This is only used with people below you and/or friends.
This is basically the only option you have for “Commanding” a divine force/god/etc.

*This pattern originated from students in the Meiji period, apparently (Weblio)

Examples

  • 座りたまえ – Have a seat.
  • いっぱいやりたまえ – Have a drink.
  • 先に着いたら由にくつろいでいてくれたまえ (Weblio) – Freely relax for me if you get there first.
