Rather than say its..
Plain form verb/Word + というより

というより is an expression used to rephrase some other statement. It is usually written as かな。
というより means “Rather than say x, its more appropriate to say Y“. 
Like というと, this is an expression that acts like a particle, so do not use だ before と.
This phrase is usually used in reference to some previous statement or information. 

Examples

  • 食べ物というより、毒沼みたいな何かだった – Rather than call it food, it was something like a poison swamp.
  • 勇敢といより、ただのアホじゃない? – Rather than call them brave, aren’t they just an idiot.
  • 寒いというより、涼しいだ。 – Rather than call it cold, its cool. 
  • 検査というより拷問だった – Rather than a test, it was torture. 
  • 食べるというより、飲み込んだ – Rather than “eat”, it was more like (they) swallowed it whole.
  • 気を遣っているというより、ただのごますりだ – Rather than being considerate, he’s just sucking up. 
  • 友達というより、知り合いだ – He’s more of an acquaintance than a friend.
