Generic Adverbs
Adverbs modify verbs. Adverbs generally connect directly to verbs with no particle needed.
Common Adverbs
- いつも (itsumo) – All the time
- よく (yoku) – often
- たぶん (tabun) – likely
- たくさん (takusan) – a lot
- すこし (sukoshi) – a little
- ときどき (tokidoki) – sometimes
- たまに (tamani)- occasionally – needs に
- ぜんぜん negative (zenzen) – Never (needs negative verb)
- あまり negative (amari)- Not a lot (needs negative verb)
Examples
- いつも する (itsumo suru) – always do
- たくさん たべる (takusan taberu) – a lot eat. -> eat a lot.
- ときどき のむ (tokidoki nomu) – sometimes drink.

い Adjectives
change the last い to く.
な Adjectives
change the な to に.
Please read adjectives first. A lot of Japanese adverbs are created from adjectives.
Formation
For い Adjectives, change the last い to く.
- うれし
い→うれしく歌う (ureshii→ ureshiku utau) happily sing - たのし
い→たのしく あそぶ (tanoshii→ tanoshiku asobu) – funly play – Happily play.
For な Adjectives, change the な to に.
- しずか
な→しずかに あるく (shizukana→ shizuka ni aruku) quietly walk - きれい
な→きれいに かたづける (kirena-> kirei ni katadzukeru) – prettily clean up.
