Adjective Conjugation

This page is specifically about conjugating adjectives when they fall at the end of a sentence. (see below)
Negative Tense
い Adjectives
- Final い(i)→くない (kunai)
- たのし
い(tanoshii) -> たのしくない (tanoshikunai)
な Adjectives
- Drop the “na” add じゃない(ja nai) or じゃない です (ja nai des
u) - Same as a noun in this pattern.
- しずか
な(shizukana) -> しずかじゃない (shizuka datta)
Examples
- がっこうは たのしくない – School isn’t fun.
- アニメは にんき じゃない – Anime isn’t popular
- よるは しずか じゃない – Night isn’t quiet.
Past Tense
い Adjectives
- Final い(i)→かった katta
- たのし
い(tanoshii) -> たのしかった (tanoshikatta)
な Adjectives
- Drop the “na” add だった(datta) or でした (deshita)
- Same as a noun in this pattern.
- しずか
な(shizukana) -> しずかだった (shizuka datta)
Examples
- きのうは たのしかった – Yesterday was fun.
- アニメは にんき だった – Anime was popular
- よるは しずか だった – Night was quiet.
Negative Past Tense
Essentially Negative form ない → なかった
い Adjectives
- Final い(i)→くなかった (kunakatta)
- たのし
い(tanoshii) -> たのしくなかった (tanoshikunatta)
な Adjectives
- Drop the “na” add じゃなかった(ja nakatta) or じゃなかった です (ja nakatta desu)
- Still the same as a noun in this pattern.
- しずか
な(shizukana) -> しずかじゃなかった (shizuka ja nakatta)
Examples
- きのうは たのしくなかった – Yesterday wasn’t fun.
- アニメはにんきじゃなかったです – Anime wasn’t popular
- よるは しずかじゃなかった – Night wasn’t quiet.
Conjugated Adjective + Noun
Although all conjugations of い Adjectives may be freely used like Adjectives to modify Nouns,
な Adjectives have to use な (present), じゃない (negative), だった (past tense) or じゃなかった (Negative Past tense) to modify nouns.
Examples
い Adjectives
- たのしいよる – A fun night.
- 楽しくないよる – A not fun night.
- かなしかった夜 – A night that was sad.
- さびしくなかったよる – A night that wasn’t lonely.
な Adjectives
- しずかなよる – A quiet night
- しずかじゃないへや – A room that isn’t quiet.
- きれいじゃなかったひと – A person who wasn’t pretty.
- きれいだったひと – A person who was pretty.
