Noun Also
Nounも

も is a particle that means ”also”. It is used to emphasize that something also has something in common. It replaces the particle that would be where it is, usually は/が
It is easiest to to think of it as replacing は。
Sometimes this particle is said to mean “too”, but this tends to cause a common mistake:

Common Mistake

Person A: わたしはねこがすき。watashiha neko ga suki – I like cats.

Person B:

  • 〇わたしねこがすきです。watashi mo neko ga suki -I also like cats.
  • ✖わたしはねこすきです。watashiha neko mo suki -I cats also like ✖
  • ✖わたしはねこがすきです。watashiha neko ga suki mo -I like cats too ✖

As these examples show, you must attach も to what has the thing in common. In this case, it attaches to me because I like cats, just like person A. It may be easier to remember as it replacing “は”.

Examples

  • わたしいく – I also will go. (I will go too).
  • ぼくうれしい I also am happy. (I am happy too).
  • かれつよい – He is also strong.
  • かれねこがすきだ – He also likes cats.
